Rune Process (GIF)
1) Simple sketch, feeling out anatomy and basic layout.
2) More final lineart established.
3) Skipped a few steps, but basically I paint the gray-scale underpainting (in Sai).
4) Now in photoshop, I adjust the levels to get a full range of whiteness and blackness on the spectrum, to add contrast.
.
5) I add a gradient map to establish a basic color scheme and mood. I'll usually try a bunch of different color gradient combinations until I find one I like best. This is usually set to Soft Light at ~40%-60% opacity.
6) I paint in basic skin tones! Most color layers are set to "Soft Light", with varying brush opacity.
7) Basic colors for other details - in this case the flames (aka the light source). Color added to body to further emphasize the light source.
8) Black gradient added to the peripheral areas of the painting to give contrast. Saturated colors added to focal points to draw the eye.
9) Motion blurred color over the eye cuz it looked cool.
10) Smaller details added.
11) Aaaand, signature.
